Diamond studs are one of the most universally desired accessories. When searching for your forever solitaire studs, there's more to consider than what catches your eye. It’s hard to resist when you stroll by a window and a stunning pair calls your name, but it’s essential to walk through a mental checklist before purchasing on a whim. But, if you plan your purchase responsibly, you’ll have a price-worthy staple in your wardrobe, from everyday wear to a touch of glamor for a night out. So, we put together a guide to help you make your choice. You'll be showing off those brilliant diamond studs before you know it!

What should you consider when buying a fancy pair of studs?

4 Cs

  1. Cut: The way that light interacts with the facets of a diamond will determine its sparkle. So, a diamond with an excellent cut will have more fire while one with a poor one will seem dull. We always recommend an excellent cut diamond.
  2. Colour: Diamond Colour can range from D to Z, with D being the more appealing end of the spectrum. A D colour may increase the price of the diamond exponentially, though. We recommend an excellent cut along with a G, H, I, or J colour, depending on the budget.
  3. Clarity: Natural Diamonds can have black flecks or striations in them called inclusions. Lab-grown diamonds naturally (ironic choice of word, we know) have better clarity than natural diamonds that have spent millennia in the ground. From Internally Flawless (IF) to Slight Inclusions (SI), there is a spectrum to clarity as well. It’s safe to go with Very Slight Inclusions or Slight Inclusions.
  4. Carat:  The crucial one for the naked eye, “How Big Is That Rock?” Fret not. You can always go bigger – it’s simply about whether you want to choose a mined diamond or a lab-grown one. Just remember which one is easier on the pocket and better for the environment.

Shape

Another consideration is the actual shape of the fancy diamond. Is the marquise too thin or the pear too fat? Is the oval too round or the heart too wide? Choosing a fancy cut is more a matter of taste than a matter of precision, unlike round brilliant cuts with precise measurements. The GIA does have fancy cut diamond grading standards for the best proportions. While these guidelines are useful, it is still best to choose according to what you like and want.

Cost

Round, brilliant stones require the highest amount of labor. To achieve the perfectly proportioned round, brilliant shape, the original rough stone must be removed. A fancy cut, on the other hand, keeps more of the rough stone in the shaping process. In fact, fancy-shaped diamonds cost nearly half less than round, brilliant cuts of the same weight. Fancy cuts are less expensive because of the type of stones used. Inclusions are easier to hide or remove during the polishing process, which is why cheaper, rough stones are often used in fancy cuts. Fancy cuts can also appear larger than their round, brilliant diamond counterparts.

It’s also important to make sure you purchase your studs from an authorized and reputable retailer, especially if you’re buying your diamonds online.
